OKAN (Toronto, ON)
OKAN is a Toronto based Cuban band created in early 2016 by Elizabeth Rodriguez and Magdelys Savigne. Music from the World with deep Cuban roots.
New Tradition Music (Toronto, ON)
2018 Juno Nominee, New Tradition Music Is an interactive performance project that explores the concepts of tradition and modernity through spoken word, music, song and dance. While creating bridges across musical genres, the original compositions incorporate ancient instruments such as the 2000 plus year old indigenous kuisi bunsi flute (a.k.a. Colombian gaita) with more recent instruments such as the turntables.
Los Poetas (Toronto, ON)
Originally their collective musical gaze was on 1970s Nuyork Salsa and the era of boom bap Hip-Hop that would come out of New York two decades later; but now Los Poetas have gone further back and deeper into their genetic memory, looking beyond the music of their parent’s generation towards their ancestors -- and through them, the indigenous roots of spoken word, drum and melody and the bridge to today where we call them rap, beats and hooks.
The Mariachi Ghost (Winnipeg, MB)
From driving rhythms and soaring melodies, to brooding synths and dreamy vocal breaks, The Mariachi Ghost fuses traditional Mexican song, progressive rock, and a flair for the dramatic, to ignite the world of their namesake's tenuous existence.
Eljuri (New York, NY)
Born in Guayaquil Ecuador and raised in New York City, Cecilia Villar Eljuri is a compulsive genre-fuser writing songs that mirror the experiences of her life. Touted as one of the top Latina guitar players in the world, she blends the sounds and rhythms she heard from her mother’s piano, her father’s vinyl records, her siblings’ CD’s and from the clubs she frequented on Manhattan’s lower east.
