Swooping down from the vast Zimbabwean plains, Tichaona Maredza, a guitar in one hand, a drum in the other and an mbira in his teeth, arrived in Toronto in 2008. Singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, he quickly formed a group in December 2009. The Tich Maredza Band hit the circuit hard, veterans in a matter of months. Tich's music, while rooted in Zimbabwean traditional styles, has a contemporary flair. A drummer/guitarist, Tich's compositions have rhythmic drive, melodic intelligence, and lyrical messages of challenge, and hope. Indoors, outdoors, concert hall or dance hall, The Tich Maredza Band puts smiles on faces and feet on the floor. In addition to the presentation of their original music the TMB has accompanied and or opened for a variety of African stars who have performed in Toronto including: Oliver Mitukudzi, Thomas Mpfumo, Freddi Gwalla, and Wazimbo. Tich Maredza is a 2017 Juno award winner. TMB consists of Tich Gombiro (bass), Gordin Mapika (drum) and Larry Lewis (lead guitar). Find out more about Tich Maredza Band on Facebook.
Bass - Tich Maredza
Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, Tich Gombiro has been performing with the TMB since 2009. His Canadian credits include performances with Masaisai, Nhapitapi and Fojeba. A natural musician and dancer Tich’s musical style is rooted in the Southern African traditions of Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Drum Kit - Gordin Mapika
Gordin is a legendary drummer in the African scene. He was Thomas Mpfumo’s drummer for several years and was a member of the Bhundu Boys, the first Zimbabwean band to sign a record contract with a major label. He has toured the world many times over and we are lucky he ended up here in Toronto.
Lead- Guitar - Larry Lewis
Classically trained, Larry has performed in a variety of Jazz and World music combos. He has performed Portuguese Fado with Animafado, Brazilian music with Pedro Joel in the group Paraiso Cruel and currently plays Cuban Son and Changui in the group Tres Kilos. While schooled in the Zimbabwean guitar styles of Chimurenga and Sungura Larry brings a personal style and improvisational flair to the Tich Maredza Band .
